With the Sandusky City Personnel Committee meeting this past Monday, May 13, to discuss a return to former procedure for city manager and police chief evaluations, more discussion on the matter is expected when the whole city council meets again next Monday for their second May meeting.
For the past several years, the city’s evaluations of City Manager Dave Faber and Police Chief Brett Lester relied heavily on the men’s self-reported activities and accomplishments. However, prior to the May 6th meeting, council member Tim Stone expressed to the mayor some concern about how the evaluation is handled– namely, that there is no input from the council itself, with the council contributing only on the final approval.
Mayor Thomas Lukshaitis noted that over 10 years ago, evaluations had more council input, with a numerical evaluation system being used to rate performance and spaces left for additional comments, before the task was shifted onto the mayor’s responsibilities.
With Faber presenting the personnel committee with past forms the city used for the process, as well as examples used by other communities in their evaluations, more decisions are expected to be made when the council meets again May 20. It is unclear when the evaluations will be eventually held, with the prior two annual evaluations approved May 2, 2022 and May 1, 2023.
