Weekend patrols for the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office began with an interesting discovery by a resident Saturday morning.

Marine deputies were dispatched to the Black River on May 18 after a resident, who was doing a clean up along the river, found what they believed was a submerged vehicle via their SONAR equipment.

Deputies were joined at the scene by the St. Clair County Dive Team, with divers soon confirming the resident’s hunch was correct, and that there indeed was a car at the bottom of the river. Due to the car’s condition, it was obvious to investigators that the car did not enter the water recently and no lives were in danger, with the car safely removed from the water.

After deputies spoke with residents in the area, a neighbor confirmed that in 2016, a man was driving on the ice when the ice broke, the car became submerged and the driver simply walked away, abandoning the car. The case was turned over to the Detective Bureau for further investigation.
