A Huron County man led a sheriff’s deputy on a high-speed chase along the Huron-Tuscola county line early Sunday morning, and is now facing a felony for his trouble.
According to the Huron County Sheriff’s office, the incident began shortly after midnight on Sunday, August 4, as Deputy Alex Jobes patrolled near Grant Township’s intersection of Elkton and Sebewaing Roads and observed a vehicle headed west at a high rate of speed. Using his radar, Deputy Jobes found the vehicle was traveling at 136 mph. He attempted a traffic stop, using his lights and sirens but to no avail as the driver refused to pull over, initiating the chase.
The pursuit led Deputy Jobes through the town of Owendale by way of side streets before the suspect headed south on Owendale Road, then east on McAlpin Road before turning south on Gagetown Road. When the chase led to the Huron-Tuscola county line, the deputy ended the chase, but less than an hour later, authorities received a call tipping them off to the involved car’s location at a shed in Tuscola County’s Colwood neighborhood.
Though the Huron County Sheriff’s Office was able to meet at the location with a Tuscola County Sheriff’s deputy, it was learned that the chase’s suspect was now in another vehicle, whereabouts unknown.
However, Deputy Jobes once again caught sight of the suspect, this time in a second vehicle on Bay Port Road in Huron County’s town of Bach, and was able to stop the vehicle for a traffic violation. Doing so, he found his suspect, 24-year-old Lawson L. Weber of Sebewaing, in the passenger seat of the car. After interviewing everyone in the car, the deputy arrested Weber on suspicion of felony fleeing/eluding.
Weber was booked that night at the Huron County Jail, later posting a $5,000/10% bond for his release. He was arraigned on the felony charge on Monday, August 5, and though he remains free on bond, his driver’s license was confiscated.
