This Sunday, August 18, floats of all shapes and sizes will be seen making their way down the St. Clair River for the annual Float Down event.
This annual, end-of-summer tradition is looked forward to by many, drawing crowds of up to 6,000 people in years past. The unsanctioned event begins at noon at Lighthouse Beach and floaters conclude at Chrysler Park in Marysville.Vessel traffic will be paused during the event but will resume promptly at 7:00 pm.
While it is a fun activity, a great way to cool down, and a unique way to see the shoreline, safety is of utmost importance. Federal, state, and local law enforcement, fire, and EMS will be present to assist through the duration of the event. The collaborative effort helps ensure all areas of concern are covered in the event of an emergency.
Sheriff Mat King encourages everyone to stay safe and keep the following tips in mind:
- Use a reliable, study inflatable to avoid issues.
- All children six years old and under are still required to have life vests, with life vests recommended for all participants.
- Due to the current and large body of water, the water may be very cold. Prolonged exposure can still cause hypothermia even in warm water. Be responsible.
As with any event, authorities want people to be able to enjoy themselves, but keep safety a top priority. Sheriff King also urges participants to make sure someone on land knows you are out, and let them know when you arrive safely at the end. If you have any questions, please reach out to the Sheriff’s Office or U.S. Coast Guard Sector Detroit.
