A Detroit man was once again found guilty by a Huron County jury, though this time for resisting and obstructing an officer.
A jury of seven men and five women deliberated about two and a half hours before finding James Thomas-Nevels guilty Wednesday, August 21, on the count, which involved Harbor Beach Chief Todd Bucholtz. On a second charge of resisting and obstructing another officer, the jury was unable to come to a decision and was declared hung.
Thomas-Nevels was charged with the two-year felony following a September 2023 incident in Harbor Beach, when law enforcement was called to an apartment complex to escort him from the property and found that he had a current warrant out for arrest.
Thomas-Nevels, who was found guilty in May of this year for Absconding or Forfeiting a Bond, a four-year felony, has at least four other prior convictions, including one for unarmed robbery and three for delivery of controlled substances. With that number of prior convictions, he is considered a habitual offender, which increases the maximum penalty to 15 years in prison.
Retired and visiting Judge Donald A. Teeple will sentence Thomas-Nevels on Monday, October 21, at 9 a.m.
