Huron County authorities are urging residents to be on the lookout for a man suffering a mental health crisis who escaped a Harbor Beach hospital early Monday morning.
The Huron County Sheriff’s Office reports that their officers first came across the man shortly after 12 a.m. this morning in the White Rock area of Sherman Township.
The 40-year-old man, who had driven from Indiana to Huron County for unknown reasons, was found by deputies standing in the roadway. The man is believed to have no ties to the area, and was reportedly suffering from hallucinations when he was found, with deputies taking him to Harbor Beach Hospital for psychiatric care.
However, less than six hours after dropping him off, the Huron County Sheriff’s Office were called back to the hospital, as the man had disappeared, with staff believing he left via a window.
Though he had left the hospital in a gown and blue boxers, authorities found the hospital gown shortly after the search began, and believe he is only in the boxers now. The man is described as white and thin, weighing about 170 lbs and standing at 5 feet, 9 inches, with short hair and a salt-and-pepper goatee.
Though authorities believe that he is not a danger to the public, the surrounding community is being urged to secure their homes and vehicles. Furthermore, Harbor Beach residents living near the hospital are being asked to check their surveillance cameras for any tips related to his location/direction of travel.
Hospital staff and local fire crews are still currently searching, and urge anyone with information to call 911 immediately.
