The Huron County Sheriff’s Office is reassuring staff at McLaren Thumb Region Hospital after a bomb scare Friday morning.
A county deputy was dispatched to Colfax Township shortly after 9:00 a.m. on August 30, responding to a doctor’s office behind the McLaren Thumb Region Hospital. Staff there had found a package in the office that resembled a bomb, as well as other suspicious and out of place items, like spent ammunition and gun parts.
The office was not open for business at the time, but out of caution, buildings near it and part of the McLaren Thumb Regional Hospital were evacuated. Operations at the complex returned to normal just before noon, after a technician from the Michigan State Police Bomb Squad responded and found the package was a modification of lithium batteries wired and packaged together, supposedly for use on a scooter.
The office’s doctor was also interviewed as part of the investigation. Other agencies also responding to this incident were the Michigan State Police, the Bad Axe Fire Department, as well as hospital security and operations personnel.
