Despite winning August’s primary election and seemingly setting himself up for an easy re-election, St. Clair County Sheriff Mat King will actually have an opponent come election day in November: Warren Head, his challenger in the primary.
Head, who currently serves as Yale’s Police Chief, began his campaign in April of this year, and was defeated by the incumbent in August’s election by only 2,856 votes. Despite the defeat, Head is pushing forward as a write-in candidate for November’s election.
Head has expressed that he is running for sheriff after hearing of things happening in the department “that were not proper” and would upset county citizens if they were aware, such as the situation surrounding the lawsuit by former Sheriff’s Lieutenant Scott Jones.
In addition to serving with Yale Police for 11 years, Chief Head served as a St. Clair County deputy for 30 years, a district security officer for the US Marshals Service for 15 years, and spent four years of his military service as a US Air Force policeman.
Chief Head will be holding his next election event, a fundraiser, on Thursday, September 26, in Marine City.
