Despite his defeat in August’s primary election for Sanilac County’s next prosecuting attorney, lawyer Robert Heyboer is still moving along, and is slated to officially become the county’s Indigent Defense Director next week.
Though Heyboer has been acting as the county department’s director since the beginning of this year, overseeing the defense of those who cannot afford legal representation in addition to his assistant prosecutor duties, the county’s board of commissioners will be approving an official contract for Heyboer to assume the role on a full-time basis.
The one-year contract runs from October 1, 2024 through September 30, 2025, and promises Heyboer an annual salary of $105,000. It is unclear if the contract will be renewed and/or extended at the end of September 2025. With Heyboer’s move from the prosecutor’s office, the Board of Commissioners will also be approving the posting and filling of the assistant prosecutor role being left vacant by the role shift.
The board, who meets next Tuesday, October 1, at 1:00 p.m., will also be discussing job postings for the role of district court clerk and chief deputy/election specialist/CPL manager, with the latter position to report to County Clerk Leslie Hilgendorf.
