The Tuscola County Sheriff’s Office is warning the Thumb area of a new text/email scam, with scammers attempting to impersonate USPS.
While the specific message details can differ between platforms, the scammers will claim to be a notification from USPS concerning a package. While some messages claim that the “parcel cannot be cleared [and] is temporarily detained” by U.S. Customs, others will claim that a delivery was missed due to an incomplete address. No matter the frame of the message, the hook is the same, with the text then prompting the recipient to follow a link and “correct” the wrong address or confirm details.
Authorities recommend always checking on such important things as your bank information and mail from the official accounts, rather than following an unknown text link, especially if you weren’t expecting a message or update.
