Sanilac County, Mich. – McKenzie Health System is pleased to announce that, beginning immediately, patients can now receive Modified Barium Swallow Studies (MBSS) right at our hospital facility in Sandusky. This valuable diagnostic service, which evaluates swallowing function and identifies potential issues, provides a convenient, close-to-home option for patients who would otherwise need to travel to larger medical centers for assessment.

The addition of MBSS expands our already comprehensive range of diagnostic imaging services, which include MRI, CT, ultrasound, 3D mammography, and more. Designed to help pinpoint specific swallowing issues, MBSS uses a special x-ray and a safe contrast material (barium) to visualize the swallowing process. This assessment is essential for individuals experiencing difficulty swallowing due to various conditions, including stroke, head injury, or degenerative diseases.

“Offering MBSS locally stays true to our commitment to patient-centered care,” said Jay Smith, Director of Diagnostic Imaging and Cardiopulmonary. “We are excited to bring this specialized diagnostic service to our community, ensuring that our patients have timely access to the tests they need to manage their health.”

Adding this service addresses a significant need in the community, where access to specialized diagnostic assessments like MBSS has previously been limited. By providing MBSS locally, McKenzie Health System continues to prioritize the health and convenience of our patients, sparing them the need to travel long distances for care.

“At McKenzie Health System, our focus has always been on people, not just services,” said Billi Jo Hennika, Chief Operating Officer. “This addition isn’t about growing our facility; it’s about finding meaningful ways to support our community’s health journey. By offering specialized services like MBSS locally, we aim to make quality care more accessible and truly prioritize the well-being of every individual who walks through our doors.”

Patients in need of a Modified Barium Swallow Study can now schedule an appointment through their primary care provider or contact our scheduling department at 810-648-6110.
