With the frigid temperatures the Thumb is enduring, the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office would like to review car seat protocols when it comes to cold weather and small children.
While it may be tempting to dress toddlers and infants in the thickest winter gear for warmth, when travelling in the car, this could have devastating results. Puffy jackets and coveralls may be warm but they prevent the straps on a car seat from being tightened properly, leaving children at risk if an accident occurs.
Instead, dress small children in layers and stick with a fleece jacket. Once secured, it is easy to add a blanket or their jacket (draped over them) on top to keep children warm. This ensures that the straps are tightened properly in the event of a crash. When not tightened properly, children risk being ejected from the car seat if an accident should occur.
If you have any questions regarding winter wear and car seats or general car seat installation questions, please call St. Clair County’s car seat safety program at (810) 966-3706.
