The Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office says alcohol, drugs and excessive speeds are not contributing factors in a crash that killed a Brown City man Monday evening in Burnside Township.

The crash occurred near the intersection of Van Dyke and Wilcox Roads, just before 5 pm on Monday, January 27.

Investigation found that 53-year-old Marion Mazurek of Brown City was headed south on Van Dyke in his 2004 Mini Cooper when a northbound semi truck lost control. The semi jack-knifed, entering a counter-clockwise rotation before crossing into the southbound lane and colliding with the Mini Cooper.

Both vehicles came to rest in the west ditch, with Mazurek pronounced deceased at the scene. The semi’s driver was not injured.

Investigators believe that weather and roadway conditions were contributing factors to the crash, with west winds blowing snow into the roadway and causing icy conditions.

Agencies assisting at the scene included the Imlay City Police Department, Brown City Fire Department, Metamora Township Police Department Drone Division, and the Lapeer County Reconstruction Team.

The crash remains under investigation.
