Lapeer Post troopers are investigating a scam that was reported last Tuesday at a home in Wales Township, St. Clair County.
The victim reported on January 28 that she received a call the previous day from a stranger who advised her that her grandson was arrested and needed $8,500 for bond. The suspect then advised her that someone would come pick the money up from her. Later that day, a man came to her address and collected the $8,500 cash in an envelope.
On January 28th, troopers were contacted by the victim and her daughter because she had received a second phone call from the suspect requesting an “additional $12,000 due to complications with the court and bond”.
Surveillance was established at the residence with the assistance of the Thumb Narcotics Unit and the suspect was observed approaching the victim’s home. When troopers contacted him, he ran away and troopers were able to take him into custody without injury. The suspect admitted that he was sent there to steal money by a foreigner.
The stolen $8,500 cash was located in the man’s vehicle. He was lodged at the St. Clair County Jail for felony fraud charges.
Troopers ask that if you or someone you know was a victim of a similar scam, please contact the Lapeer Post at 810-664-2905 or your local MSP Post.
