Sanilac East Fire Authority, other agencies extract man from worksite accident

A man has died after a wall fell on him at work, requiring extraction by the Sanilac East Fire Authority and other agencies.

The Sanilac East Fire Authority was dispatched to 2353 North Lakeshore Road in Carsonville around 4:40 p.m. on February 12 after receiving a report of a man who had a wall fall on him. When the call was first made, the man was still able to talk and breathe. The fire authority arrived at the scene around 4:54 p.m., with members observing an eight foot deep trench, wherein the man was located.

A chunk of dirt had fallen and landed on top of the man, with members of the contracting company attempting to dig him out of the trench. At this time, no signs of life were observed. Determining the trench was too unstable to enter, the fire authority set up a command and advised the other employees to exit the trench.

The Huron County Tech Rescue and Macomb County Technical Rescue Teams were called to the scene, with Macomb responding around 7:30 p.m., followed shortly by Huron. While waiting for additional equipment, teams on scene formulated the extraction plan, with extraction efforts beginning at 9:30 p.m.

The man was extracted from the trench shortly before 10 p.m., with patient care turned over to the Sanilac County Medical Examiner and Sanilac EMS.
