Marlette Police, Sanilac County Sheriff’s Office identify thieves going through local cars

After reported thefts and sightings beginning February 11 of two individuals going through unlocked cars in Marlette, the Marlette Police Department has identified their suspects.

Between the early morning hours of 1:30 am and 3:30 am on Sunday, February 16, two individuals were observed entering unsecured vehicles on Chard and Church Streets, removing valuables along the way.

Appealing to local residents with security cameras, the Marlette Police only had to wait until the next night to see the suspects in person when the police and Sanilac County Sheriff’s Office were summoned to the area of Rogers and Morris Streets for a reported sighting of the suspects on Monday, February 17.

When the two saw the police, they took off on foot, with officers and deputies giving chase. They followed the tracks to the 6100 Block of Fenner St, where the tracks led to a residence’s back window. Contacting the homeowners, parents to two teenage sons, officers were invited in, with the parents being cooperative in the investigation.

A brief search of the house provided some of the missing property that had been taken from vehicles over the past few days, along with clothing and shoes the two were wearing during the crimes that were observed on video.

A report and request for charges will be filed with the Sanilac County Prosecutor’s office.
