A two-vehicle injury crash in Mayville closed M-24 for about two hours last Thursday, according to the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office.

Lapeer County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched shortly before 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 6, to an injury traffic crash on M-24 south of Millington Road in Mayville, located in Lapeer County’s Rich Township.

Investigators determined that a 26-year-old Lapeer woman was driving a 2008 Dodge Ram pickup truck north on M-24, when south of Millington Road, the vehicle lost stability. The vehicle crossed over the centerline into the path of southbound traffic while sliding sideways. A 43-year-old Lapeer man was traveling south on M-24 in a 2003 Ford Ranger.

Evidence supports that this driver attempted evasive action and moved to the west shoulder of the roadway, but the vehicles collided on the west shoulder. Impact caused the 2003 Ford Ranger to overtum and come to rest on its side within a farm field. The 43-year-old driver inside the Ford Ranger was unresponsive and required extrication from his vehicle by Mayville and Watertown Township Fire Departments.

Both drivers were transported to McLaren Lapeer Region for medical attention. The Lapeer woman sustained non-life-threatening injuries while the Lapeer man sustained serious, life-threatening injuries and currently remains hospitalized.

Lapeer County Sheriff’s Deputies are continuing to investigate this collision. Weather and roadway conditions (light snow and winds) potentially played a role. M-24 was closed for approximately two hours for rescue and investigative purposes.

Lapeer County Sheriff’s Deputies were assisted at the scene by the Lapeer County Reconstruction Team, Michigan State Police, Mayville Fire Department, and Watertown Fire Department.
