The Sanilac County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam currently circulating in our area.

Scammers are calling individuals claiming they owe delinquent property taxes and demanding immediate payment over the phone. Please be aware, these calls are NOT from the Sanilac County Treasurer’s Office.

Scammers may request payment via gift cards, wire transfers, or other untraceable methods. They may use threatening language or claim legal action will be taken if you do not comply. Do NOT provide personal or financial information over the phone to anyone claiming to collect taxes.

If you receive a suspicious call, hang up immediately and contact the Sanilac County Treasurer’s Office directly at (810) 648-2127 to verify the status of your taxes.

Help stop these scammers—stay alert, stay informed, and spread the word to friends and family, especially older residents who may be more vulnerable to this type of fraud.
