Marlette City Council to move forward with proposed marijuana ordinances

In a 4-2 vote Monday night, Marlette City Council voted to move forward with two proposed ordinances that would permit the establishment of recreational marijuana businesses within the city limits.

The ordinances–one regulatory and one zoning–would allow for one Class C marijuana grow operation and one adult-use marijuana retail business to operate in Marlette. Council members Don Redman, Pat Wilson, Chris Kopacz, and Jason Bell all voted in favor of sending the draft ordinances to the city’s planning and zoning committees for further review, whereas Dan Edwards and Shane Hunter both voted against the measure.

Changes to the language of the ordinances can be proposed by the planning and zoning commissions before being sent back to city council. At that point, the council will schedule a public reading of the ordinances, with 15-days notice being given to the public in local newspapers and media outlets. From there, a second reading will be scheduled, during which council members could vote on formally adopting the ordinances.

Also at Monday night’s meeting, Marlette City Council members discussed a replacement for outgoing City Manager Ryan Rudzis, whose last day will be May 19th. Rudzis informed the council that recently-retired Marlette Police Chief Brian McGinnis had expressed interest in serving as an interim city manager until a permanent replacement could be found. In a unanimous vote, council members moved to begin discussions with McGinnis regarding the interim city manager position.

The next Marlette City Council meeting is scheduled for Monday, May 5, at 6:00 p.m.
