In addition to sharing the news that the city and county are working on the property lot split for the planned animal control building, Sandusky City Manager Dave Faber also shared at Monday’s meeting that demolition at 24 and 36 South Morse Street will begin Tuesday, April 8.

With ongoing talk since 2019 at least, when the city bought the former dance studio at 24 S Morse Street, the city has been eyeing that particular block for further parking expansion. With city parking and expansion briefly discussed during talk of the 2023 budget, the real push for expansion came in fall of 2023, with several business owners expressing to the council the need for more space during the first September meeting.

Demolition had initially been expected to begin in February 2025.

Also at the April 7th meeting, the council approved a recommendation to the state’s Liquor Control Commission so that the incoming Don Felipe restaurant can obtain a Class C liquor license. The restaurant, which has four other locations in Michigan, announced their expansion plans in February.

While it is unclear when the Sandusky location will open for business, obtaining the liquor license is a major step in the process, with representatives from the restaurant noting that building renovations are also planned before opening.
