Multiple agencies assisted in searching for a missing 15-year-old girl on Sunday after an Easter Egg Hunt at Camp Cavell in Sanilac County.
Sanilac County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to Camp Cavell around 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 13, due to a report of a missing juvenile. Upon arrival, deputies learned that the missing juvenile was a 15-year-old girl from Macomb Township who had traveled to Camp Cavell with her family for the Easter Egg Hunt. However, prior to the event, the girl became upset and walked away from the group, presumably to calm down.
After the event ended, the girl’s family realized she had not returned and was not answering her phone, prompting family, friends and camp staff to begin searching the area. When they were unable to locate her, authorities were called.
Multiple agencies responded to assist in the search, including the Lexington Fire Department, Sanilac County Search and Rescue, the Sanilac County Sheriff’s Office Drone Team, the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office, and an independent Michigan and Indiana-based Search and Rescue team. The search effort continued until nightfall, but the juvenile was not located.
Later in the evening, the Sheriff’s Office and family began receiving calls and social media reports of possible sightings. Based on this information, Sheriff’s personnel and the Michigan/Indiana-based Search and Rescue team responded to the area of Washington and Ridge Roads in Sanilac Township. Within minutes of beginning their search, the missing juvenile was located curled up in a ditch, cold and wet but otherwise unharmed.
After being missing for nearly 12 hours, she was safely reunited with her family. Sheriff Paul Rich would like to thank everyone who assisted in this investigation, and he especially extends gratitude to those who called in with accurate and timely information.
