A man has been recognized by the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office for his quick thinking and fast action in the face of a January incident.
The Good Samaritan, identified by the sheriff’s office as “Michael”, was traveling on Lakeshore Road with his granddaughter on Monday, January 20 when he spotted a vehicle on fire near Wilkes Drive. The man immediately pulled over to assist, with someone still inside the vehicle.
By a chance of fate, Michael had placed a fire extinguisher in his vehicle earlier that morning. Michael utilized the entirety of his fire extinguisher, effectively holding off the flames until responders arrived. After it was empty, he attempted to use the extinguisher to break the windshield to access the driver.
The man’s quick thinking and proactive actions kept the flames from the driver and likely saved his life, with Sheriff Mat King presenting Michael with a Citizen’s Award this past week.
