(PORT AUSTIN TOWNSHIP) — A 22-year-old Canton man was retrieved by Huron County Sheriff’s deputies late Monday afternoon after his kayak overturned near the Port Austin Reef Lighthouse. The man was among three kayakers that were on the return leg of a three hour outing when the incident occurred. Sheriff Hanson says the man was unable to upright the kayak and began signaling for assistance to a passing powerboat. That boat radioed authorities in Huron County who responded. Deputies loaded the Canton man along with two other men from Sterling Heights, ages 22 and 25, along with their kayaks onto the patrol boat and returned them to shore. Sheriff Hanson says kayakers should know their physical limits and conditions offshore before attempting a north shore outing and should carry a cell phone in a watertight enclosure for emergencies.
