Huron County concludes inmate death investigation

(BAD AXE) — The Huron County Sheriff’s Office has concluded their investigation into the death of inmate Nancy Bouchard on May 21. The 50-year old woman was found unresponsive by corrections deputies at 11:30 a.m. that morning inside a single person cell. Bouchard had been arrested by Elkton Police on a weapons charge and booked into the jail at 2:17 a.m. Sheriff Kelly Hanson says that during the booking process, deputies said Bouchard was cooperative and did not display any signs of intoxication. Hanson says an autopsy concluded that Bouchard died of drug intoxication with heroin and amphetamine. Small packets of heroin, wrapped in plastic, were found in a body cavity and the death certificate stated that the approximate interval between onset and death was minutes. According to the Sheriff, it appears the woman smuggled heroin into the jail in a body cavity and died sometime after ingesting an unknown amount of the drug. The investigation is now being forwarded to the Prosecutor’s Office for review.
