(Sandusky) – Sanilac County Undersheriff Brad Roff has announced the department has been awarded a $9,000 grant to purchase three hand held thermal imaging cameras. Roff made a brief presentation to the Sanilac County Board of Commissioners Tuesday afternoon explaining his request that in order to get the grant, the cost would have to be paid up front with reimbursement coming after purchase of the units. The Sanilac County Sheriff Department was one of 14 agencies in Region 10 that were competing for the grant.
The Undersheriff said he anticipates the thermal imaging devices to be used to assist law enforcement in cases including breaking and entering, missing persons or other needs where foot prints or body heat may be detected. Roff said Supervisors will be trained with the devices and carry them in their patrol cars. He anticipates the thermal imaging devices to be in use by the end of the year.
