(Yale) – A new ballistic vest policy was adopted by the Yale city council Monday night, addressing an issue that caused a public outcry earlier this year. Police Chief Michael Redman had been served a five day suspension by Mayor Richard Busch that was later rescinded.
Redman received the disciplinary action for not wearing his protective vest while on duty and wearing it “if warranted.” In the new policy approved Monday night, all sworn law enforcement officers, including the Chief, will be required to wear their vest while on duty. The policy does allow for it to be removed while conducting office business.
In other council news, a SAW grant allowing video taping of the city’s sewer system was approved at a cost of just over $147,000. The project will allow the city to have their entire sewer system filmed and identify problem areas.
As part of the grant, the city approved new software in the amount of $5,222 and a new computer that will read the data, at a cost of nearly $1,300. Yale will pay 10% of the total project costs, with the grant covering the remaining balance.
