(Sandusky) – The Sanilac County Board of Commissioners met Tuesday afternoon, discussing several topics including the possibility of solar power coming to the county. Board Chairman John Hoffman said he has spoken with residents in Sanilac Township about the issue, stating participating property owners would receive between $500 and $800 per acre for the solar power installation. “I don’t know of many farmers, when they are making far less than that farming the land, I don’t know how they could turn that down,” the Board chairman said.
Hoffman said contractors have been looking for larger parcels in other parts of the county for the 20-year lease program, including Speaker Township. He said it county residents could anticipate hearing more on the issue in the coming months.
MSU Extension Regional Director Joe Bixler also spoke to Commissioners, hoping to plant a seed of need of a full-time 4-H position within the county. Currently, the county has a part-time employee.
Bixler said they are limited in what work can be done with the constraints of working 20 hours. Bixler said a full-time person would cost approximately $31,000 with benefits. He said he felt the Commissioners were interested in what the needs were and showed a genuine interest in helping, if they could.
Bixler also noted, with the addition of the new training facility at the Dawson Street building, more local classes will be held, utilizing the renovated space.
