Huron County law enforcement honored

Sheriff Kelly Hanson presented his staff with their annual awards

(Bad Axe) – The Huron County Sheriff Office held its annual meeting with the 37 full-time members it consists of. The activities of the prior year were reviewed and expectations and goals for 2017 were also discussed. Many Deputies received awards for the past year’s service and comments and suggestions by all were taken into account.

Deputies receiving awards: Life Saving Awards were given to Gabe Callender and Eric Hessling. On June 5th, 2016 Deputy Callender used an AED to save a woman’s life. On September 5th, 2016, Deputy Hessling assisted in the removal and CPR efforts, which revived a male subject that was submerged under water for several minutes.

Professional Excellence Awards for Deputies who performed 150 or more hours of overtime service: Brandon Kadar, Daryl Ford, Eric Hessling, Gabe Callender, Jake Dhyse, Jordan Gunsell, Jim Hunt, Katie Carter, Kim Kociba-Weber, Marc Woodward, Warren Kuhl, Ryan Neumann, Ryan Swartz, Steve Bismack, Stephanie Voss and Todd Schember.

Sheriff’s Commendation Outstanding Awards: Deputy Nathan Leppek was recognized for the foot chase and apprehension of an out of county, wanted felon in a wooded area.

Deputy Ryan Swartz was recognized for his assistance to a neighboring Sheriff’s Office in solving a drug related armed robbery. Deputy Swartz was also recognized for his continuing efforts in drug enforcement.

Deputy Stephanie Voss was recognized for her committed efforts of recovering over $41,000 of expenses owed by inmates.

Deputy Marc Woodward was recognized for his exceptional report writing skills.

Deputy Steve Bismack was recognized for his continued assistance with office vehicle technical maintenance, change over and special projects, construction and fabrication.

Sheriff Kelly Hanson said the department’s  main functions are providing 24/7 police services in areas without law enforcement coverage, and 24/7 staffing in the 70-bed jail. Some of the other services the department provides is civil process, handgun registration, sex offender registry, law enforcement training to other police agencies, marine safety patrol, search and rescue, as well as underwater recovery. Hanson said the office is also committed to the enforcement of illegal drug trafficking and the safety education of the county’s children.
