Jerry Steigerwald
(Brown City) – In a hand written note to the school board, Brown City Schools Superintendent Douglas Muxlow resigned his position effective May 1st. He had been on paid leave prior to the resignation.
A school board member confirmed to WMIC last week that the action was taken at their meeting earlier in the week and the board accepted the resignation. The meeting, attended by 46 people, lasted just six minutes. No details of the resignation were available.
Board President Allan Burgess was authorized to contact retired Superintendent Jerry Steigerwald to see if he would consider serving as an interim until the board decides how the district will proceed.
At that special meeting Friday evening, the board voted to hire retired Superintendent Jerry Steigerwald on an interim basis, while the board searches for new superintendent to succeed Muxlow who had previously resigned.
“The school district, and this board, are very fortunate to have someone like Jerry to step in and handle things,” said Burgess after Friday’s meeting. “We have great staff and to have Jerry overseeing things, it’s just a plus for us. I have no doubt he will do a great job for us.”
Steigerwald has agreed to work on an “as needed” basis thru the end of the current school year. He will not have regular office hours, and will be paid a stipend of $1400.00 monthly. Steigerwald noted that he’s at Brown City to keep “the ship on the right course” and emphasized the school has great people in the business office, and great principals.
He said he planned to meet with the teachers at all levels and make sure everyone is on the same page and ready to move forward from the situation.
The board has not indicated if they will hire a firm to help conduct a search or try to hire from within the district. Steigerwald said he does not intend to start the 2017-2018 school year as the district’s superintendent.
