Tuscola County sheriff deputies are investigating a scam call Friday to an elderly Almer Township woman that resulted in $4,000 being withdrawn from her bank account. According to deputies, the woman received a call that her grandson was in jail in Switzerland. The woman’s grandson was in fact, in Switzerland visiting a friend and police said the subject that called, placed a younger subject on the phone who identified himself as the complainant’s grandson. The woman ended up withdrawing $3000.00 and purchased gift cards at Wal-Mart in Caro. The complainant then scratched off the pin identification number on the back of the card. She later provided this information to the subject posing to bail her grandson out of jail. Two days later another request was made to withdraw $1000.00. The complainant withdrew the money and again purchased the gift cards, providing the PIN identification to the subject posing in the same fashion.
