AREA NEWS BRIEFS – Tuscola burn ban; Miss Michigan USA

(TUSCOLA COUNTY) – Due to the extremely dry conditions, warm temperatures and the forecast of little or no rain in the immediate future, the Tuscola County Fire Cheif’s Association has imposed a countywide burn ban in effect immediately. No burn permits will be issued until the area receives a substantial rainfall. Small campfires and charcoal & propane grilling is still permitted, as long as they are attended and when done, the embers must be extinguished completely. No other outdoor burning is permitted. (BAD AXE – AP) – A Michigan man sentenced to life in prison without parole for killing a woman when he was a teenager more than 20 years ago has been re-sentenced. A Huron County judge reduced 34-year-old Matthew Bentley’s sentence Monday to a minimum of 32 years, with credit for 18 years already served. Bentley was re-sentenced because of a 2012 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that barred life without parole sentences for juveniles as cruel and unusual punishment. The ruling also applied retroactively.
(BLUE WATER AREA) – Port Huron will be hosting the Miss Michigan USA and Miss Michigan Teens USA pageants this weekend, for the 16th consecutive year. The Blue Water Area Convention and Visitors Bureau welcomes the pageants back to Port Huron this weekend. The Miss and Teen competition will be held at McMorran Place Theater and will consist of three segments: evening gown, fitness/swimsuit and interview. (PORT HURON) – Two Port Huron men were arrested Monday by Port Huron police after trying to have a fraudulent prescription filled at two separate businesses. Police said the men presented a prescription at the CVS store in Port Huron. The store was out of the medication and called police, after becoming suspicious about the men. The men left the store and went to a Rite-Aid to try and have the prescription filled. Police responded and arrested the two men, ages 28 and 22. They are facing multiple charges as well as the 22-year old being an out-of-state fugitive. Police discovered prescriptions on the men that allegedly were stolen from a Troy doctor’s office.
(HURON COUNTY – BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP) – No one was seriously injured in a two-vehicle, rear-end collision Saturday in Huron County. Deputies responded to the scene on Kinde Road in Bloomfield Township around 1 a.m. Saturday morning. According to police, a 53-year old Port Austin woman slowed for traffic in front of her when a car drive by a 57-year old Port Hope man was unable to stop in time, striking the rear of the woman’s vehicle. The Port Austin woman refused transport to an area hospital and sought her own treatment. Two other people in the vehicles were uninjured.
(HARBOR BEACH) – A 22-year old Harbor Beach man sustained serious injuries in a one-vehicle accident early Sunday morning. According to Huron County sheriff deputies, the man lost control of his car on Sand Beach Road around 6:30 p.m. Police say Cody Miller crossed the centerline and ran off the road striking a culvert and rolling over before hitting a tree. He was transported to Harbor Beach Community Hospital and later transferred to Saginaw Covenant Cooper for further treatment of his injuries.
(HURON COUNTY – RUBICON TOWNSHIP) – Huron County sheriff deputies are investigating the theft of thousands of dollars worth of equipment from a shed in Rubicon Township last week. Deputies were called to a cottage on Fernand Drive late last week after the homeowner, from Lincoln Park discovered a lock on his shed had been broken and the items were missing. Police believe the theft happened during a two-week time span when the owner was last at his cottage. According to deputies, items taken included a John Deere Lawnmower, chain saws and a pressure washer. Deputies are asking anyone with information to contact the Huron County Sheriffs office.
