(SANILAC COUNTY) – Sanilac County is among the counties placing road restrictions on all roadways. Engineer/Manager Robb Falls said effective at 7 a.m. Monday, February 19th, seasonal load, speed and weight restrictions will be enforced on all County roadways and bridges. Discussed at their previous meeting, Road Commission officials felt with recent warmer temperatures and thawing of recent snow, the restrictions should be in place. Surrounding Thumb Region counties have similar restrictions in place.
(TUSCOLA COUNTY) – Temperatures have broken from the frigid cold this week, catching the attention of area Road Commissions. The Tuscola County Road Commission has joined other area commissions, placing weight restrictions beginning next week. Tuscola County will impose seasonal weight restrictions starting Monday February 19th at 7am. Restrictions are placed on roads to minimize damage during thawing conditions when road bed softens. (TUSCOLA COUNTY) – Tuscola County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Manager Steve Anderson was among those taking part in Ice Rescue Training by the Huron County Sheriff’s Office, near Sand Point, earlier this week. Despite having to rescue several ice fishermen already this season, two of whom lost their lives in Saginaw Bay, responders work to keep skills sharp for their own safety. The County’s Air Boat was used during the training exercise and was purchased jointly by the Huron and Tuscola County Sheriffs Departments, through Homeland Security funding.
(ST. CLAIR COUNTY) – Thumb native Jeff Terpenning, the new Superintendent at Capac schools, isn’t wasting any time in leading the charge of improvements in the school district. A lengthy list of badly needed repairs has been compiled and Terpenning said once school is out for the year, construction crews will begin an assortment of renovations. The work was made possible after district voters approved bonding with nearly $6 million dollars. Included in the upgrades is a new high school roof, new technology throughout the district and the purchase of two new busses. Bids for the work will be awarded at a later date.
(LAPEER COUNTY) – Pending further testing of the building site, Imlay City officials are expecting construction of their new fire hall to begin yet this year. The Department of Natural Resources sold the site, of nearly three acres, to Imlay City for $189,000 dollars. It’s expected construction costs of the hall will be around $2 million dollars. The city has already approved a resolution to reimburse $1.75 million dollars in general obligation bonds to fund th e construction.
In other Imlay City council news, members gave their approval for the purchase of 115 new smart meters for monitoring residential water use. It will cost around $15,000 dollars to buy the meters and once installed, over a third of the city will have the more modern meters. The new meters give more accurate information and allow workers to drive down streets and gather meter readings instead of having to read each one individually.
(TUSCOLA COUNTY) – The 23rd Annual School Tours at Thumb Octagon Barn of Gagetown are coming May-9 to May 11, and officials are asking schools to pre-register for the tours. The theme for the 2018 School Tours is “The Thumb: Naturally Sweet!” Guided tours begin at 8:30 AM each day with the last tours starting at 1 PM. Students will learn how products grown/raised in the Michigan’s Thumb were used to sweeten foods in the early 1900’s and today are continuing to be used to sweeten food around the world. Last year, more than 1,300 students from eight counties took part in the tours.
