(SANILAC TOWNSHIP) – The Sanilac County Road Commission heard an update on work being done along M-25 where erosion has threatened a portion of the highway from falling into Lake Huron.
Engineer/Manager Robb Falls, who showed drone footage of the damage in Sanilac Township, said work will continue through the month as efforts are being made to prevent further damage.
Over 1,000 ton of large concrete, shipped to the site from Alpena, have been placed in the water to form a makeshift breakwall while another 500 ton of smaller stone is being poured onto the site in hopes of firming up dirt slipping into the water.
The erosion has caused extensive damage, bringing the edge of the falling earth to within 12 feet of M-25. The fix, estimated to cost well over $200,000 dollars, is being called a temporary fix until a permanent solution can be done by MODT later this year.
In other Road Commission news, board members were given an update on new tandem-axle trucks being prepared to be put in to service as well as other new ones arriving in the coming weeks.
The board heard financial updates showing a total of $8.6 million dollars being received in Michigan Transportation Funds in 2019, an increase of nearly $500,000 dollars over 2018 and $1.2 million more than in 2017.
Sanilac County has received their January 2020 payment from the State for more than $688,000 dollars, $58,000 dollars more than they received in January of last year.
