The following is a press release from Huron County Sheriff Kelly Hanson regarding an incident involving a vehicle in the water:
(HURON COUNTY) – Late yesterday afternoon shortly before 16:00, our office responded to an accident on Weale Rd., west of Caseville Rd. in Winsor Twp., where a single vehicle with a single occupant ended up in a deep ditch.
The driver, Drake Bletl, age 19 of Bay Port, told Deputy Leppek that he had fallen asleep while westbound on Weale Rd. and drove through a guardrail, landing in the Pigeon River.
The river which is 10’ to 12’ in that area, was moving fast due to recent precipitation and was full of assorted debris such as downed trees.
Fortunately Bletl was able to break out the back window out of his 2006 Chrysler Sebring convertible and get out to swim to shore.
He complained of chest injuries from the impact but refused the services of Scheurer Ambulance.
They, along with the Winsor Fire Department had also responded to the accident.
The vehicle was removed Tuesday in the daylight due to dangerous river conditions. The totally submerged car had to be located by a diver and hooked to a cable in order to get it out.
