Lapeer Schools may close Mayfield Elementary

The Lapeer School Board was expected to make a major decision this week, despite concerns from staff and parents of students in the school district. Faced with expensive repairs that are badly needed, and a recently failed $94 million dollar bond issue, the board is considering closing Mayfield Elementary School at the end of this school year. School officials said the potential closing was not a direct result of the failed bond, but that the district did not have the money to do the repairs. Should the building close, it would affect more than 370 students and staff for next year. If the school is closed, it would leave the district with three elementary school buildings and force the redistricting of students.
