(TUSCOLA COUNTY) – Police are investigating a single-vehicle crash in rural Tuscola County that left a woman dead last weekend.
According to the Tuscola County Sheriff Department, around 4:30 a.m. Sunday, deputies responded to a car on fire in a ditch on Fairgrove Road near Vassar Road in Gilford Township.
A Mobile Medical Response ambulance was en route to another call when the paramedics noticed the burning car, Sheriff Glen Skrent said.
Deputies determined the vehicle was heading west when it left the roadway, struck a tree, and caught fire.
Deputies found one person inside the vehicle, Skrent said, adding that due to the fire, the body was not able to be immediately identified.
Authorities say no plate or paperwork on the vehicle was found.
Sheriff Skrent said the deceased was believed to be a 32-year-old Bay City woman.
DNA samples later confirmed the victim was Ashley Mikowski, a 32-year-old woman from Bay City.
An autopsy was scheduled for Wednesday afternoon to determine the cause and manner of death.
Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to call the Tuscola County Sheriff Department.
