Because of the unprecedented interest in this year’s election, Clerk’s throughout the Thumb area have been issuing updated information regarding absentee voting.
As of early Tuesday morning, employees in the Sanilac County Clerk’s Office said just under 9,900, or about one third of the total registered voters in the county, were issued absentee ballots and around 91% of the ballots, or just under 9,100, have been returned for processing.
Officials said the remaining 821 ballots could either be in the mail or voters decided to go to the polls in person. There are just under 28,000 registered voters in Sanilac County.
Meanwhile, in Tuscola County, Clerk Jodi Fetting’s office reports nearly 12,700 absentee ballots were issued with 10,801, or 85%, of those returned.
Long lines with voters waiting to cast their decisions are being reported across the State, including locally where lines out the doors of polling places are common due to a large turnout and people observing COVID precautions.
In other election news in Sanilac County, while voters across the State continue to case their votes, the majority of the decisions being made are coming at the National level.
In Sanilac County, voters have few local issues to decided, with the exception of millage requests. Just one race for the Supervisor position will be decided today (Tuesday) when voters will choose either Joseph Donnelly or Dan Kelly for the job in Sanilac Township.
One other race is going on in Moore Township for the position of Treasurer where either Naysn Helig or Joyce Hagan will be named winner.
Also in Sanilac Township, Tanzia Milarch and Dru Morgan are competing to be Treasurer while in Speaker Township it is a three-way race between Tracy Sheldon, Jean Ann Fuller and Janice Priess.
Voters will select two candidates from a field of three in Worth Township for Trustee while four people are running for two spots on the Croswell city council and five candidates are vying for three positions on the Lexington village council.
Voters in the county are also deciding the fate of several millage requests and proposals.
We will have results of the voting as it becomes available on WTGV 97.7 FM.
