Late Wednesday evening, Michigan State Police Troopers from the Caro Post were dispatched to a residence on Schroeder Ave. in Worth Township, near Lexington, for a mentally ill subject who had stolen a handgun from his girlfriend and was making homicidal and suicidal comments. Troopers, along with Deputies from the Sanilac County Sheriff’s Office exhausted all leads while attempting to locate the subject but were unsuccessful. Throughout Thursday, law enforcement agencies again attempted to contact the suspect. Deputies from the Sanilac County Sheriff’s Office responded and determined the man was alone and intervening at that time was too dangerous as the man was still suspected to be armed with the stolen pistol. Later Thursday, the caller contacted 911 again and advised the subject’s family had obtained a court authorized mental health petition and added the suspect was now claiming he took several medications. Troopers attempted to make contact with the man, but the man refused to comply with commands and locked all doors and shut off the lights. Troopers observed the man inside the residence several times and were eventually able to make phone contact with him and able to convince the man to come outside where he was then taken into protective custody without incident and transported to a local hospital for further mental health treatment. Further investigation revealed the man had the stolen pistol loaded inside the residence and readily available on the kitchen counter. Troopers were assisted on scene by the Sanilac County Sheriff’s Office.
