(SANILAC COUNTY) – Sandusky Community Schools areteaming up with the Sanilac County Health Department to host a two-day mass COVID-19 vaccination program at the high school on February 1st and 2nd.

The collaboration comes after the health department announced a backlog of nearly 3,000 requests for the vaccine.

Last week, the health department stopped taking appointments due to the overwhelming response to the availability of the vaccine.

Superintendent Paul Flynn said the event will be held in the gym, to minimize the possibility of the spread of the virus to students. Attendees are asked to enter through the west end of the gymnasium.

School and health department officials have enlisted the assistance of the Michigan National Guard to give the vaccinations, serving 900 people on both Monday and Tuesday, from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m.

Like many locations throughout the State, Sanilac County is not able to keep up with requests for the vaccinations, due to the shortage of available vaccine.

Officials say to make an appointment do not contact the high school, rather contact the health department to check on availability.
