(HURON COUNTY) – The Huron County Sheriff Department is investigating a phone scam that has circulated around other law enforcement agencies in the Thumb region, where a caller is asking for money.
Sheriff Kelly Hanson said Huron Central Dispatch received several calls from complainants who had just realized that they had fallen prey to a phone scam.
All reported they had received a call from an individual identifying himself as Sgt. Kevin Wade of the Huron County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff Hanson says this fake individual told the victims they had warrants out on them and that they needed to go and buy $1500 worth of gift cards, then give him a number off of those cards so he could clear up the warrant.
Once given to the scammer, the money is supposedly transferred from the card immediately. Residents need to understand that law enforcement does not do business even remotely close to that way.
Especially asking for money over the phone from a gift card. As of time of this release, unfortunately $3000 so far has been taken from victims.
Sheriff Hanson said any person receiving a call from supposed Huron County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Kevin Wade, or any other suspicious caller of such, needs to hang up and report their experience to their local police department, or their county’s central dispatch.
Please understand phone scams of all sorts are occurring on a regular basis every day and night.
Always be suspicious of any call when someone unknown to you is asking something.
When in doubt, law enforcement will be happy to sort out what is or isn’t legit.
A similar incident took place in Sanilac County earlier this year.
