(SANILAC COUNTY) – Brown City residents and commercial accounts for garbage disposal have a new company taking over their contract, beginning at the start of this month.
City Manager Clint Holmes informed council that after many years of servicing the Brown City area, Knox Disposal was sold effective February 1st.
The new company providing garbage removal services in Brown City now is GFL (Green For Life). The City received a letter from GFL on February 10th notifying them of the sale.
A representative from Knox Disposal, as well as the letter from GFL, stated that the City’s current contract, which is valid until the end of September of 2024, will be honored by GFL.
The new company’s officials say all operations will remain business as usual.
Council was also informed that a copy of the completed and electronically signed Annual Act 51 Mileage Certification Report was mailed to MDOT.
The report is required in order for the City to receive highway funds from the state this year, in the amount of $124,000.
In other Brown City news, residents are facing higher water and sewer bills following the reading of an ordinance that establishes new rates for the City.
The new rates will become effective 30 days after the new ordinance is adopted. In the new rate system, non-metered accounts will see rates increase from seven to 16 dollars, depending on the number of people living in the home.
Senior Citizen rates for non-metered accounts will be slightly less.
For those with working meters in their homes, the new rates have an overall increase of $4.53 per month.
New sewer rates, depending on metered or non-metered, will average $2.31 per account.
