Rescue crews responded this morning to a report of a white pickup in the St. Clair River at the 3400 block of Military Street, finding the male driver dead and still in the vehicle at the scene. Captain Brian Kerrigan of the Port Huron Police said that it is unknown when the pickup went into the river, with the truck having been first spotted in the water from the air at 10:30 a.m. by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, rescue teams later responding around 10:45 a.m. Thursday morning.
The police and U.S. Customs and Border Protection teams were joined at the scene by the U.S. Coast Guard, the Port Huron Fire Department, and the St. Clair County Sheriff Dive Team. Northbound traffic on Military Street is shut down on Connor street and being rerouted via detour for a few hours until investigators finish at the scene. At press time, the dive team was still working with investigators to salvage the submerged truck at the bottom of the river.
The truck may have been in the water for days by this point, officials have said, and they are reaching out to those in the area with cameras to see any possibly related footage.
At this time, the driver has not been identified, pending family notification, and anyone with information or footage of the incident are urged to call Port Huron Police Detective Lt. Chris Frazier at (810) 984-9711 or anonymously through the CAPTURE Hotline at (810) 987-6688.
