As schools prepare for the start of fall classes, Port Huron Area Schools are currently asking a question many around the country have asked in recent years: “How do you solve a problem like a mascot?”

Working with the Blue Water Indigenous Alliance, the St. Clair district is weighing options as they try to decide what should stay and what should go in relation to the district’s Big Red, Little Chief and Little Red monikers and imagery. Superintendent Theordore Kerhoulas noted to the board that while some changes to symbols were made “to be less offensive to our indigenous community… we have found that there is still work to do.”

The board of education is expected to discuss the issue at the next meeting on September 19, having passed on that discussion yesterday. As of yet, no mention of the possible costs and funding involved in the planned change for Port Huron Schools.

Three of the district’s schools– Port Huron High, Michigamme Elementary and Roosevelt Elementary– are now in a similar boat as  Sandusky Community Schools and their past Redskin mascot, which was retired in April.
