The end of last week saw separate traffic accidents in Huron and St. Clair counties.
On Thursday, an accident at the 5100 block of Lakeshore Road left a Fort Gratiot Township man dead from his injuries. Deputies with the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office, as well as Tri-Hospital EMS and Fort Gratiot Fire/Rescue responded to the scene after 8:30 a.m. to find that the driver, later identified as 62-year-old Robert McCormick had rolled his car several times. The investigation is ongoing, as it is unclear how or why the car rolled over.
McCormick was the longtime owner of Fort Gratiot’s Big Boy and the McCormick’s Conner Street Pub, with the pub having opened last year after years of dreaming by McCormick.
The next day, in Huron County, at 7:32 in the evening, Huron County Sheriff Deputies, as well officers with Pigeon Police, Elkton Police and Elkton Ambulance Services, responded to the intersection of Caseville and Stein Roads in Windsor Township to find a two vehicle crash that left one driver dead and the other injured.
According to investigation, it appears that Avery R. Kuhl, the 20-year-old driver of a 2010 Dodge Pickup, disregarded the intersection’s stop sign as he headed west on Stein Road, crashing into a southbound 2022 Jeep Liberty as it travelled on Caseville Road. The crash sent both vehicles into a cornfield on the southwest corner of the intersection.
Despite efforts to free him from the wreckage by the Windsor Fire Department, the 58-year-old Jeep driver, David L. Caister of Caro, passed due to his injuries. The 20-year-old from Sebewaing was taken to Scheurer Hospital for treatment.
An autopsy was scheduled for today (Monday), with the investigation continuing.
