A Thursday afternoon crash in Verona Township left one dead and two injured, according to a press release by the Huron County Sheriff’s Office.
The release further reports that it was about 1:39 p.m. when deputies and officers with the Bad Axe and Ubly police departments responded to the crash at the intersection of M-142 and M-19, east of Bad Axe, with Central Huron Ambulance and the Bad Axe Fire Department also responding to the scene.
Witnesses and further investigation put together a more cohesive picture, which showed that 35-year-old Jared Kubacki of Ubly was driving his 2011 Chevrolet pickup east on M-142 when 69-year-old Robert Johnson of Oxford, driving his 2018 Dodge Caravan north on M-19, failed to stop completely at the intersection’s stop sign, turning into the pickup truck’s path.
Johnson had to be freed from the wreckage, unfortunately dying of his injuries at the scene. His wife, Catherine, who had been riding with him, was transferred to an out of county hospital after initial treatment at McClaren Thumb Region Hospital.
Kubacki was also taken to McClaren Thumb Region via Central Huron Ambulance.
The investigation is ongoing, with an autopsy planned.
