A Saturday night accident in Fort Gratiot Township left an 11-year-old pedestrian dead and her walking companion injured.
St. Clair County Sheriff deputies reported to the scene on November 12, where, around 7:00 p.m., two pedestrians from Fort Gratiot, the 11-year-old and a 44-year-old woman, attempted to cross 24th Avenue between the northern Walmart entrances and Carrigan Road when they were struck by a 51-year-old Clyde Township woman driving a 2012 Buick Verano.
The Clyde Township woman remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators, while the Fort Gratiot woman was taken to McLaren Port Huron Hospital for her traumatic injuries. The girl, unfortunately, was declared dead at the scene.
While chemical tests are still pending, authorities do not believe that speed was a factor, especially with how that area was slick with rain, unlit and has no crosswalk.
This incident follows almost exactly two months after a 59-year-old Port Huron woman also died while attempting to cross 24th Avenue, this time around 10:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 10. In that case, the driver, a 33-year-old Port Huron woman, was driving her 2006 Chevrolet Malibu south on 24th Avenue when she crossed through Krafft Road’s flashing yellow light, accidentally hitting the pedestrian as the wheelchair attempted to cross the street from the west side. Alcohol and drugs were not believed to be factors in that case either.
While there have not been new updates regarding the September case, last Saturday’s investigation continues.
