A multivehicle accident Tuesday morning on westbound I-94, at Church Road, closed the road for almost five hours.
Around 8:45 a.m. on Tuesday, June 27, 67-year-old Stephen Chapman of Shelby Township was driving a 2018 Dodge Ram 3500, when he did not stop in time and rear ended a 2010 GMC Acadia, subsequently causing a 5 car pile-up.
Chapman did not survive the accident and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The Acadia was driven by a 33-year-old female of Port Huron and had three passengers: a 9-year-old, 10-year-old, and 15-year-old. All were transported to the McLaren Macomb with serious injuries. The 10-year-old that was in the vehicle was later transported to Detroit Children’s Hospital in critical condition.
The third driver, a 29-year-old male of Port Huron, driving a 2008 Honda Civic, was also transported to the hospital, McLaren Port Huron with serious injuries. The two other vehicles impacted were a 2023 Ford F-150 and a 2010 Dodge Ram 3500. Both drivers were not transported for injuries.
The St. Clair Sheriff’s Office later shared via press release: “Thank you to the many good Samaritans that stopped to assist and give aid to the injured.”
During investigation and recovery, authorities advised the community around 9:30 a.m. to avoid the closure at westbound I-94 and Fred Moore Highway, with the area reopening around 2:00 p.m.
It is not believed that drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.
