Chadwick Mobley, the man arrested and arraigned on charges related to the 2011 murder of Andrea Eilber in Lapeer County, will not be back in court for a month following his probable cause conference this morning at 9:00 a.m.
Mobley, who is charged with two counts of first degree murder and one felony firearm count, will be returning to court for an examination scheduled on Monday, September 7, at 9:00 a.m. with Michigan’s assistant attorney general Orande Williams acting as prosecutor. It was a familiar scene for Williams, who also worked for the state’s case against Kenneth Grondin, the man originally arrested and convicted for the death of Eilber, his girlfriend at the time.
However, Grondin’s conviction was overturned in 2018, and the man successfully petitioned the court this month to have his bond conditions of house arrest lessened, with the man now able to leave his home and travel around St. Clair, Lapeer, Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties. He has been waiting for a retrial in the case, though the arrest and trial of Chadwick Mobley may render another trial for Grondin unnecessary.
In addition to the DNA sample obtained by state police matching Mobley to a cigarette found at the 2011 crime scene, MLive obtained information suggesting that Mobley still possessed the murder weapon, a .38 caliber gun matching the bullet that killed the 20-year-old Eilber as she housesat for relatives in Mayfield Township. It is not known if and how Eilber or Grondin knew Mobley.
Mobley, who briefly escaped during extradition from Montana, where he found after fleeing from Utah, was to be before Lapeer County 71A District Judge Laura Barnard for today’s conference, but due to Judge Barnard being on medical leave, her Tuscola County counterpart 71B District Judge Jason Bitzer oversaw Friday’s proceedings instead.
