The St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a one vehicle crash that resulted in the death of an 85-year-old Marine City man.
The crash occurred yesterday, August 14, around 10:40 p.m. on River Road. near Avalon Beach Street in Cottrellville Township. Deputies responded to the area after a tree was reported to be partially hanging over the roadway. The St. Clair County Road Commission was also dispatched to remove the tree.
Upon arrival, a deputy made observations leading him to believe a vehicle may have been involved. After further investigation, it was discovered that a vehicle had struck the tree and then left the roadway continuing north before eventually coming to a stop in a nearby yard.
The driver, an 85- year-old Marine City man was the only occupant of the vehicle. Tri-Hospital EMS and Marine City Fire responded and the driver was pronounced deceased at the scene. River Road was shut down for several hours during the investigation.
It is not believed that alcohol or speed were factors. The St. Clair County Accident Investigation Team is continuing the investigation, with the man’s name being held at this time pending further notification of family.
