The Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office reported yesterday that a two-vehicle crash in Mayfield Township took the life of a 73-year-old Brown City man.

Lapeer County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched around 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 3, to a crash at Roods Lake and Daley roads. Authorities shared in a news release that initial investigation found that 73-year-old John Kata of Brown City was driving alone and south on Roods Lake Road in his 2009 Chevrolet Malibu, when he failed to stop at the Daley Road intersection and was hit broadside by a westbound 2022 Nissan Sentra. Kata’s vehicle was hit on the driver’s side, with both vehicles leaving the road and Kata’s car overturning onto its roof.

While the Nissan’s driver was taken to McLaren Lapeer Region Hospital for non-life threatening injuries, Kata had to be extricated from his Malibu, later passing away in the hospital.

Agencies assisting the Sheriff’s Office at the scene included Lapeer County EMS Ambulance, Michigan State Police, the Lapeer County Reconstruction Team and the Lapeer City Fire and Rescue Department. The intersection at Roods Lake and Daley roads was closed for two hours during recovery and investigation.
